Mansur Gavriel’s Spring Collection Displayed Like a Museum Exhibition

What: With many taking a serious curatorial approach to the display of their accessories these days, it made good sense that Mansur Gavriel based their thoughtful presentation format this season on their love of museum displays.

Who: Designers Floriana Gavriel and Rachel Mansur chose a gallery-like space in Chelsea’s art district to present their latest collection as if it were a modernist exhibition,  complete with “security guard” girls in red 2-D polo dresses and a “gift shop” featuring trinkets and post cards printed with their own lensed photographs of the collection. “We both went to art school and have always  been inspired by these kinds of environments and visuals,” said Mansur.

Shoes: The duo, best known for their bags but quickly building a following for footwear too, introduced eight new shoe styles. “We worked for the first time with silk, grosgrain and calf leather,” said Gavriel. A low-heeled babouche-meets-mule (which she wore) looked particularly elegant, while v-vamp backless ballerinas (either flat or with a little blocky heel) captured the collection’s modern minimalism. And though they admit they do see the bags everywhere, the designers refrained from commenting on what it’s like shoe spotting their influential slip-ons around town. “We pretty much keep our head’s down,” demurred Mansur.
