What is Man-Made Leather

Man-made leather, also called artificial leather, synthetic fabric or synthetic leather, or faux leather made from polyvinyl chloride or from polyurethane or other synthetic materials. This material is also referred to as leatherette. It is chemically treated to resemble authentic leather.

Synthetic is durable and cheaper comparing to authentic leather. Real leather is made from animal hide (skin), and hence the leather industry is perceived as being destructive to the eco-system. Thus, faux leather is regarded as an environmentally friendly way for decoration of clothing, furniture and so forth, as synthetic leather tanneries do not harm the environment as the tanning industry of real leather does.

Man-made leather is also easy to work with and can be used in various ways. It is utilized to make footwear that resembles real leather footwear. It is used to make upholstery of vehicles. Man-made leather is also used to make items of personal use such as belts and wallets.
